I replanted an Empress tree in a large pot after it apparently died. I had planted it in the ground after?

it was already hot in June. Since then I nursed it and it has come back with two large branches. It is nearing two feet tall with large leaves. When should I try to replant in ground? Now? After leaves fall off in fall? Should I cut it to the ground after it goes dormant? Thanks
