In the Civil War, did the Union ever defend a railroad from attack from the Confederacy?

I know the North were vastly superior to the South in lines of transportation and steel, and as such, they had the majority of the railroads and trains. I'm also aware that the Confederates sabotaged the tracks or even heisted the trains whenever possible, so I'm wondering was there any battle where the Union defended the railroads from attack? Also, was there one where they were able to successfully defend the railroad, but the regiment defending them were all killed, such as in Glory when the 54th Machusetts Infantry were able to successfully create a distraction as being the first to charge Fort Wagner, and were able to storm it, despite being forced out soon after. Not the best reference but the best I could come up with.
