Why are american born african americans so religious?

I am not being a racist or anything but am just curious why the majority of african americans in the US are so christian? Seems like I have yet to encounter an african american individual who was raised in the US that does not pionately believe in Christianity. I suppose you can say that of white people...the majority are christian. But I have ran across plenty of whites, hispanics etc that are not so religious. Please, no ignorant comments or personal attacks against me...I am just curious! I'm wondering if this is something that is so strongly ingrained in african american culture, and is ped down to successive generations so fervently that it is nearly impossible to question?
